Since the PS3 was released, rumours were flying around from the start that Sony will release a slim model of the console, as they’ve done with all previous consoles. Sony have previously denied these rumours along with rumours of a price cut, but today we can confirm, both are true. The PS3 slim will be launching at the start of September. In the US it will retail for $299, $100 off the price of the current PS3, €299 in Europe and around £225 in the UK. The current PS3 model will also be reduced then from $399 down to $299.

The PS3 slim is 32% slimmer, 30% lighter and features a 120GB hard drive, which should be changeable like the current models. Linux however won’t be seen on the slim, as the “Install Other OS” feature has been removed, to concentrate on gaming and entertainment, such as Blu Ray movies.

no-psp-trophies
Sorry to disappoint you, but the Trophy system found on the PS3, won’t be making it’s way to the PSP. PlayStaion Network Operations director, Eric Lempel was asked about the possibility of trophies on the PSP, but has said they will not be coming to the PSP. Not because users wouldn’t want the system, but because the PSP is very hackable. With custom firmware, the PSP is capable of playing PSP games from the memory stick, which could “artificially inflate” the rankings and trophies of players, which could kill the trophy system. Hackable or not, I think it’s a missed opportunity, where many genuine PSP owners are let down.

Sony Ericsson have announced that Q4 will see the launch of 3 new handsets. The first handset, the Satio, is the official name of the Idou. As previously reported, it will feature an impressive 12 mega pixel camera which offers the Cyber-Shot side of the phone, while combining the phone with the Walkman experience. Also included is GPS and Wifi, as well as featuring a touch screen. The Satio is to be a smartphone and will run Symbian S60 5th Edition OS.

The other two handsets announced, Yari and Aino, are both gaming orientated phones making the Aino the closest we’re going to get to a Playstation phone (for now anyway lets hope). The Aino allows connectivity between the phone and a Sony PS3 as well as PC. Sony Remote Play will also be included on the handset, which is already found on the popular Sony PSP. The phone will also feature an 8.1 megapixel camera, a 3 inch touchscreen and GPS.

Yari on the other hand, doesn’t connect to any consoles, but it does feature gesture based technology. It will work similarly to the Nintendo Wii remote, allowing you to move, control and box in games. A less impressive camera on this handset at 5 megapixels, but still good enough to take great pictures.
